Commission Approves Annual Budget BY MILES LAYTON Editor Perquimans County Com mission approved its budget for 2021-22 that includes in creases in property tax and water rates as well as sol id waste fees for fiscal year 2021-22. during Monday’s meet ing, commissioners adopted a budget seeks a 2-cent in crease in property tax rates from 59 cents to 61 centers per $100 dollars of value - the lowest tax rate in the region. Water rates will increase from $15 to $17.50 (minimum bill) and from $7 to $9 per thousand after the first thou sand gallons. The proposed solid waste fee for FY 21-22 is $150, a $10 increase from last fiscal year. The FY 2021-22 budget con tains a 4% adjustment to the salary schedule based on- in formation from the salary study performed by the Man agement and Personnel Ser vices (MAPS) group last year. See BUDGET, A2 Committee Offers Recommendations BY MILES LAYTON Editor Perquimans County’s Civil War monument will tentative ly remain where it stands for the foreseeable future In the spring, the county commission appointed a com mittee to study the future of the Civil War soldiers’ monu ment on the courthouse green in Hertford after the commis sion received requests from Town of Hertford, Perquim ans’ chapter of the NAACP and two county commission ers to remove the monument. During it’s meeting June 16, the committee recommended two things: 1- Recommendation to the Commissioners to add sig nage which contextualizes the monument to provide the whole story of the era. 2- Recommendation to the Commissioners to approach the private owners of the Colored Union Soldiers Mon ument for relocation to the See COMMITTEE, A2 PAL Elects Bennett as its President Officers Elected for 21/22 BY MILES LAYTON Editor The Perquimans Arts League (PAL) elected Vaneeda Bennett President at its annual mem BENNETT bers meeting on Tuesday June 15. Ed Sanford, PAL’s current president, is stepping down at the end of his term fol lowing a brief transition pe riod with Ben nett. “Now that PAL is opening its new gallery, this is an excellent to time to reform and refresh our leadership,” Sanford said. “Vaneeda brings the experi ence, talent and drive that wil help PAL reach its full poten tial.” Bennett and her husband Bob moved to the area from Northern Virginia three years ago this month after research ing suitable locations for their retirement. She has an ex tensive background leading non-profit organizations for over 30 years. She held the po sition as Chief Revenue Officer for the American Diabetes As sociation in Northern Virginia where she had revenue respon sibility for $200 Million. Prior to that, Bennett was president and CEO for the Ar thritis Foundation for the state of Maryland, Associate Execu tive Director in Washington, DC and Director of Development in Pittsburgh, PA. Bennett served on numerous national boards including MedStar Health Re search Institute, which is part of the MedStar Health system DC and Maryland, Adelphoi USA Foundation, supporting at risk children in several states and Children with Diabetes, a national advocacy organization supporting families living with type 1 diabetes. Moore is No. 44 in this classic post game photo. 2 People Escape Boat Fire on Yeopim River Perquimans crews also respond to brush fire, 2 wrecks ’ FROM STAFF REPORTS HERTFORD — Perquimans County police, fire and emergen cy personnel responded to a boat fire and several other emergencies within an hour’s time on Wednes day. The series of incidents began when the county’s 911 commu nications center was notified at 1:46 p.m. of a boat fire. Emergen cy crews were dispatched to a site at the end of Bethel Fishing Center Road, where they spotted an off- shore, anchored-vessel burning in the Yeopim River. The Perquimans County Water Rescue Team got underway and extinguished the flames using buckets and fire extinguishers. What remained of the boat sank once the fire had burned to the hull’s waterline. One of the boat’s occupants was transported by Perquimans Coun ty Emergency Medical Services to the helicopter pad at Vidant Chow an Hospital in Edenton, and from there the patient was airlifted to a nearby trauma center. The second occupant was evaluated at scene and released at their request. The N.C. Want to serve on Hertford Town Council? As most folks know, two at- large seats will be up for elec tion - spots on council held by councilmen Frank Norman and Quentin Jackson. Candidate filing period starts at noon July 2 and ends at noon on July 16 at the Per quimans Board of Elections. A lot of familiar names have ex pressed an interest in running for council, so it should be a most interesting November municipal election, the type that promises a high turnout. In other news, meet Perqui mans County’s first respond ers between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday, July 2 at the county courthouse. Hotdogs, chips and drinks will be served.
